When designing a new home, the windows are an important feature, not just for the aesthetic value but for the overall practical functioning of the home.

Let’s think about this for a moment…

Windows allow in light and provide us with a view of the world, whilst at the same time protecting us from the elements of rain, wind, cold and heat. If we didn’t have windows we would simply be living in a dark box!

There are many decisions to be made when choosing windows such as style, size, colour, materials they are made from, placement, and quantity. For the most part these are often considered when thinking of aesthetically pleasing attributes to a home.

In a Passive House, window size, materials, placement and quantity are a major factor in achieving comfort and energy efficiency in the home. and they are mathematically calculated during the early design phase of a Passive House, along with exterior doors..

The quality and performance of windows and doors are affected by the design and the installation techniques. .All these factors must be taken into consideration when building a passive house in order to achieve the results that are scientifically proven to be possible.Poor quality windows and poor installation can create thermal bridges which greatly reduce the effectiveness of the overall building envelope.

That is why Windows and Doors are one of the 5 principles of Passive House design.

The end result of a home built with Passive House principles will be a healthy, comfortable, energy efficient, long lasting home.
